An application of statistics in Medicine
Assume that in the general population, in a random sample of 100 men, 30 are found to have diabetes and 70 do not. Find a 95% confidence interval for the prevalence rate of diabetes in men ?
Solution:
p^=30/100=0.3, q^=0.7
With confidence level is 95% we have:
p^-1.96 Sqrt(p^q^/n) < p < p^+1.96 Sqrt(p^q^/n)
0.3-1.96 Sqrt(0.3*0.7/100) < p < 0.3-1.96 Sqrt(0.3*0.7/100)
0.21 < p < 0.39 is the 95% confidence interval for the prevalence rate of diabetes in men.
